What attracts so many to Jonesborough, Tennessee as a small town destination?

Nestled in the northeast corner of Tennessee lies the historic town of Jonesborough, Tennessee.
The first town in Tennessee to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places and known as
the
Storytelling Capital of the World, Jonesborough still retains that small town USA aura from long
ago that so many want to experience.

People travel here for a variety of reasons – to stroll along the streets, meander through the
specialty shops, enjoy a leisurely meal in a unique setting, relax on one of the Main Street
benches, go to the theatre or International Storytelling Center, enjoy one of the numerous town
events or attend professional meetings.

Becoming more and more a travel destination location, Jonesborough has that “something” that
few other locations offer.

What is this special “something” that makes Jonesborough so different?

Historic charm, romance and southern hospitality are often words used to describe Tennessee’s
oldest town. While these qualities are appealing, what makes Jonesborough stand out and be so
unique and attractive as a travel destination is that once you arrive, you simply park your car and
enjoy.

What is so unusual about that?

It is rare to find such a variety all in one location - special event venues, historical lodgings,
specialty and antique shops, restaurants, theatres, historic sites, a brewery, a walking and biking
trail, musical and storytelling happenings, dancing, and everywhere endless photo opportunities all
within walking distance of each other. What a wonderful place to visit, to hold that special event
with family and friends, to spend a romantic weekend, or attend professional meetings or small
conference.

Tell me more about the venues and special event possibilities.

Jonesborough offers a multitude of special event possibilities whether considering a professional
meeting or just a fun occasion. With both inside & outside locations, for large or small numbers of
guests, locations range from elegant historic venues like
The Parson’s Table to locations ideal
for small gatherings. Imagine all the possibilities - reunions, family and friend get-togethers,
parties, showers, anniversaries, luncheons, holiday parties, corporate meetings, pharmaceutical
dinners, the list goes on and on……

What about lodgings?

Jonesborough has nine historical bed & breakfasts, one historic inn and one hotel, all either on
Main Street or within walking distance of downtown. What a treat to stay in an historical bed &
breakfast or inn. Southern hospitality at its finest! All are different, all tell a story of their own.

Tell me what else there is to do.

The entertainment side of Jonesborough is endless. The Storytelling Capital of the World was
earned for a reason. Storytelling and the arts spill over into the entire town – Contra dancing,
Jonesborough Repertory Theatre, Krispy Kream Theatre, Music on the Square, Storytellers Guild,
weekly musical concerts at many of the restaurants, the list is never ending. Town events are
geared to families and friends ranging from Jonesborough Days, the Heritage Alliance Annual
Progressive Dinner the first weekend in Dec., garden and house tours to the Christmas Parade.

Tell me about storytellers and The Storytelling Capital of the World.

What do most people think of when they hear the word storytelling? - Family stories, folk tales, tall
tales, handing down traditions and values from generation to generation, a good lie? Storytellers
are the ultimate in entertainment. The good ones have a unique talent. Making a special
connection with the listeners, they hold them spellbound. The listeners are so enthralled the only
thing they see is the story unfolding in their mind’s eye. One of the main goals of Jonesborough's
International Storytelling Center is to promote and preserve this oral tradition of storytelling.

The first
National Storytelling Festival began over 30 years ago and today Jonesborough is known
as a storytelling Mecca. The best of the best storytellers are featured in Jonesborough. The first
weekend in October, during the
National Storytelling Festival, Jonesborough swells to over 10,000
people! The best kept secret is
The Storytellers in Residence program which runs from May
through October, Tues.-Sat., reasonably priced, for all ages. Everyone needs to experience this at
least once in their lifetime. The problem is, once you come, you are hooked!

Tell me about the photo opportunities.

Locations for photo opportunities abound, it is a photographer’s paradise. One is hard pressed to
decide where and how many. Jonesborough, whose oldest structure dates from the 1700s, is rich
in historical buildings reflecting many architectural styles – Victorian, Italianate, Gothic revival,
federal, Greek revival and log structures. Other favorite spots include the railroad track,
The
Parson’s Table
, the courthouse steps, Little Limestone Creek, the old schoolhouse, beautiful
formal and informal gardens, Main Street, plus numerous wooden, brick and stone fences, gates
and retaining walls.

What are you thinking of?

Professional or special occasions, Jonesborough has it all; it truly is the ideal small town travel
destination.
